Tell us about yourself and Jewell Dale Farms.

Jewell Dale Farms is a family-run dairy operation, originally established by my grandfather in the 1950s. It started as a beef farm with some pigs, but transitioned to a dairy operation in the late 1970s. Today, my parents, Kevin and Cheryl, along with my brothers Kyle and Joel, and myself, manage the farm. Kyle’s wife, Jane, works full-time handling the calves and young stock, while my wife, Megan, helps part-time. It's a true family affair, with everyone contributing in their own way.

What do you do on the farm?

Our primary focus is on dairy, and we currently milk around 120 cows. In addition, we manage about 900 to 1,000 acres of crops, including soybeans, corn, and winter wheat, with some of the crops being grown as forage for our cows. The rest is sold as cash crops. I oversee the dairy operations, while Kyle focuses on the cropping side, including custom combining and milling.

How has technology transformed your farm?

After Hurricane Fiona destroyed our original barn in 2022, we made the decision to rebuild with a focus on new technology. We installed three robotic milkers, which have been a game-changer. These automated systems allow cows to be milked on their own schedule, improving both cow comfort and productivity. Some cows are milked up to six times a day, and we’ve seen a significant boost in milk production. We’ve also invested in automated calf feeders, field mapping technology for crop management, and advanced ventilation systems in the barn to ensure our cows are kept comfortable year-round.

What sets Jewell Dale Farms apart?

The combination of family involvement and modern technology really sets us apart. We’ve embraced robotics and other advancements to increase efficiency and improve cow welfare. Plus, having multiple generations involved means we benefit from years of farming knowledge while adapting to new innovations. Our family’s strong partnership is a key. Everyone has a role—whether it's my parents handling the finances, my brother Joel using his mechanic skills to maintain equipment, or Kyle managing the crops. Working together as a family has allowed us to grow and innovate, while continuing the legacy my grandfather started.
