Temporary Foreign Workers

Temporary foreign workers play an important role in various industries of the Island economy.

The Temporary Foreign Worker Program lets Canadian employers hire foreign workers to fill job opportunities when permanent residents are unavailable. The number of temporary foreign works brought on to the island over the last few years has steadily increased. The Temporary Foreign Worker Program is a program run by the government, but the working conditions typically fall onto the specific province.

Employers bringing in temporary foreign workers must adhere to various orders, notices, and guidance. These are set out by Prince Edward Island’s Chief Public Health Officer and must be followed by those seeking temporary foreign workers to fill their job positions.

It needs to be remembered that temporary foreign workers are visiting Canada and are away from their families and familiarity. Hence, the way of life they are used to can be a very different type than in Canada, but many are long-time returning staff. They come to PEI and other Canadian provinces to work to make a living for themselves and their families. Temporary Foreign Workers are very important in the island food system!
