It is a hybrid of two tropical grass species: sorghum (which can be harvested for grain) and sudangrass. Over the past few years, it had become an increasingly popular crop in Island fields, as it is mostly being used in crop rotation for potato growers. Sorghum sudangrass has many benefits to the soil, including naturally fighting soil-borne pests and diseases, improving soil organic matter, and fighting soil compaction. The grass can grow up to 10-12 feet, but it is usually cut at 4-5 feet, resulting in it being mowed multiple times throughout the season. By doing this it promotes the root system to expand and re-grow, adding to it’s value as a soil-building crop.
